Replacing hearing aid wax guards: how to do it right

The wax guard (also called cerumen filter, earwax filter or hearing aid filter) keeps cerumen and moisture away from the receiver of a hearing aid. To protect reliably it must be replaced regularly. This guide shows hearing care professionals the replacement step by step.

When should a wax guard be replaced?

That depends on the individual cerumen production of each customer. As a rule of thumb, replace the wax guard as soon as it is visibly soiled or hearing performance drops – for example when the hearing aid sounds quieter or more muffled.

What you need

  • A suitable wax guard (mind the size and system of the receiver)
  • A replacement tool, for example the reusable Clear Tool
  • The manufacturer’s instructions for the hearing aid at hand

Replacing the wax guard step by step

  1. Check the wax guard: look for soiling and identify the system and size (see overview below).
  2. Release the old wax guard: push the replacement tool straight (axially) into the wax guard. Only the subsequent quarter turn makes the tool grip the wax guard securely.
  3. Remove the wax guard: pull it out with the tool.
  4. Insert the new wax guard: pick it up with the tool and insert it into its final position in the receiver.
  5. Check the function: make sure the wax guard sits firmly and the sound quality is right.

Note: for hearing aids with a different system, follow the respective manufacturer’s instructions.

Which size belongs to which system?

Clear FilterReplaces, among others
1.3 mmCeruStop, ProWax MiniFit, NanoCare, WaxGuard
1.7 mmHearClear, CeruShield Disc
2.1 mmNoWax, ProWax
2.3 mmHF4, QuickGuard
3.0 mmHF3, CeruStop XL

Common mistakes when replacing wax guards

  • Forgetting the quarter turn – without it the wax guard cannot be held securely.
  • Wrong size – the wax guard does not fit properly or does not protect reliably.
  • Replacing too late – a blocked wax guard reduces hearing performance.

Less waste when replacing wax guards

Single blister packs with carriers and dispensers create packaging waste with every replacement. With wax guards in bulk you order only the wax guard itself and use a reusable tool.
